The imminent release on the market of the 2005 vintage of Gran Reserva 890, the top wine made by La Rioja Alta, S.A., comes full of great news endorsing its extraordinary quality. The last one, its choice as best wine in the Mature Rioja panel tasting in the March issue of the renowned British wine magazine, one of the most outstanding at the international level.
With a top-level tasting panel, consisting of the Masters of Wine Pedro Ballesteros and Sarah Jane Evans, in addition to Pierre Mansour, buyer, The Wine Society, the magazine examined close to one hundred bottles of Rioja from 15 different vintages, from 1978 to 2010. Leading the classification, with 96 points and first on the list of 'Outstanding' wines, the 2005 Gran Reserva 890 is an example of the unmistakable style of the classic Gran Reserva”, praised with terms such as ”great” and “superb.”
This magnificent result, even before it is launched, confirms the brilliant scores and reviews it has earned so far. This is second Gran Reserva 890 ‘Selección Especial’ (the first, was the 2001 vintage) in the almost 128 years of history of this brand, the first wine made by the Haro winery founded in 1890. In the international arena, ratings include the 98 points awarded by the renowned winetasters Tim Atkin MW and James Suckling, as well as the 2018 Peñín Guide, while, within Spain, is got 97 points from the ABC newspaper, El País 2018 Yearbook and the 2018 Vinos Gourmet Guide.
Made with an 'Excellent' vintage with the most exclusive selection of Tempranillo (95%), Graciano and Mazuelo grapes from our own vineyards in Briñas, Labastida, Villalba and Fuenmayor, this 2005 Gran Reserva 890 ‘Selección Especial’ stands out, according to the winemaker Julio Sáenz, for the “exceptional nature of this vintage that predicts a present and, above all, a future that is bright and promising for a wine that will continue to grow.” A wine that “will captivate lovers of the great classics of Rioja for its portentous elegance, complexity and silkiness.” Only 57,036 75-cl bottles and 1,312 magnum bottles will go on sale in the world.
